There are hidden treasures in the famous Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. This is one of them, the Language Banks. They cover the most important aspects when we speak and write in an academic environment. I have compiled the scattered banks all over the Dictionary into this document, in order that you can improve your speaking and writing. Print this document, and read it carefully

PhD Musings 2

Here's another collection of my forum postings. Again I cover a lot of area, all of which relates in some way to doing a PhD. I hope that you find the book interesting and that some of the ideas expressed herein are useful to you. The subtitle of this book - "More postings of a serving PhD student" - came about partly as a description of the contents, that is, they are more postings from various web forums. Also it satisfies my delight in words that have multiple meanings. 'Serving' has three relevant meanings here. Firstly, 'serving' refers to doing ones time and duty in an important position such as that of a diplomat or in the armed services. It can also refer, of course, to 'doing time' in prison. I feel that, in one or other of these senses (take your pick), I am 'serving' my time as a PhD student. Secondly, it can refer to delivering something to a person, such as a meal. I see this book as 'serving' up some interesting bits to you, the reader. I am 'serving' the postings up to you for your delectation.

Advice to a Troubled PhD Student

This book is about some of the problems I've had as a PhD student and how I resolved them. I believe that it would help other PhD students cope with their problems. This is the book that I wish someone had written before I started my PhD. It would have made my life so much easier. Advice to a Troubled PhD Student is about the way I experienced my PhD. It tells my personal story. If that can be useful to you then you will gain from it. If not, you will have to work out your own strategies for coping with the PhD. However, if you are looking for a step-by-step how-to-do-it book, this one isn't for you. It doesn't give detailed instructions on what to do when things go bad, it just offers ideas, based on my own experience, that might help you.

PhD Musings

This is a collection of an even dozen of my postings to web forums. They all relate in some way to being a PhD student. The postings range from the philosophical to humour to advice. There have been some great and important changes to me over the time of my candidature. I have learnt a great deal about the meaning of research, both as an activity within itself and in its effect on the person doing it. I now believe that it is not possible to do research without being changed by it. That does not only mean that the knowledge gained by doing the research will change the person acquiring it but also that the person will be changed in their outlook by being involved in doing the research. Thus research is a process that changes the individual doing it because it changes the researcher's conceptions of themself and their world.

The first automatic control system was invented for machinery, in 1930. It was used to control the speed of steam engines. By the mid-1930s, the use of automated systems had expanded in the chemical and oil refining industries. Advances in the construction industry have accelerated the development of automation systems where its use has been expanded to control fire prevention systems. A number of scientific studies to date have been carried out on this automated system until the creation of automated building systems for various purposes such as temperature control, humidity, ventilation, lighting, energy savings, safety systems and more. In this book, Concise Edition: BUILDING AUTOMATION SYSTEM, everything is simple, short and gets right to the point, where you do not have to read long sentences, ridiculous and verbose. It is hoped that this book can be fully utilized by you, whether you are a student, a construction worker, an academic or a lecturer.

A_corpus-based_study_of_modal_verbs_in_academic writing of English native speakers.PDF

This study is a corpus-based analysis of modal verbs in the English academic writing of Saudi Arabian advanced learners whose mother tongue is Arabic. The aim of this study is to develop a better understanding of the uses of modal verbs in academic writing by non-native speakers of English as compared with native speakers. The writing analyzed is a corpus created from Master of Arts (MA) dissertations. The study compares the use of modal verbs by these writers with that of the writing of native speakers of British English using the British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus. The results show that the category of modal verbs is generally underused by Saudi writers when compared with native speaker writers. An exception occurs with the modal should which was the only modal verb found to be considerably overused by Saudi writers. The modal verbs would, could and may are significantly underused. The absence of an organized modal verbs system in the Arabic language may influence Arabic speakers' use of modal verbs. The overall analysis has demonstrated that Saudi writers use a restricted repertoire of modal verbs. The analysis also points to some pedagogical implications that needs to be taken into consideration by English for Academic Purposes (EAP) material writers, particularly for Saudi learners. Runes and Roman Letters in Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts

This book presents the first comprehensive study of Anglo-Saxon manuscript texts containing runic letters. To date there has been no comprehensive study of these works in a single volume, although the need for such an examination has long been recognized. This is in spite of a growing academic interest in the 'mise-en-page' of early medieval manuscripts. The texts discussed in this study include Old English riddles and elegies, the Cynewulfian poems, charms, 'Solomon and Saturn I', and the Old English 'Rune Poem'. The focus of the discussion is on the literary analysis of these texts in their palaeographic and runological contexts. Anglo-Saxon authors and scribes did not, of course, operate within a vacuum, and so these primary texts are considered alongside relevant epigraphic inscriptions, physical objects, and historical documents. Victoria Symons argues that all of these runic works are in various ways thematically focused on acts of writing, visual communication, and the nature of the written word. The conclusion that emerges over the course of the book is that, when encountered in the context of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, runic letters consistently represent the written word in a way that Roman letters do not.

How to Survive Peer Review

Description: This is a practical guide to major forms of peer review suitable especially for the beginner, but also helpful to the experienced researcher. It provides a simple and concise explanation of the peer review process with useful tips both for the reviewer and reviewee. The use of somewhat humorous tables drives home the major points.Purpose: This is intended as a practical handbook to help the reader survive peer review and become a competent reviewer. These are worthy objectives because this is a fundamental process in academic research. The authors are effective in meeting these goals.Audience: This book is directed at people at various levels of medical training. Anyone submitting to peer reviewed journals, particularly beginners such as students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty should find this book very helpful. However, there are some useful and practical tips that even more senior faculty would benefit from.Features: Covered is peer review of journal articles, conference abstracts, grant proposals, professional peer review, and informal review from the point of view of the reviewer and reviewee. The discussion on peer reviewed journals is particularly helpful and thorough. The major shortcoming I found is the omission of the discussion of preliminary data for grant submissions. It is not mentioned at all and yet is critical to the acceptance of grants.Assessment: This book succeeds admirably as an enjoyable, informative, and practical handbook of peer review. Although I have experience in the journal review process, this book is the first one of its kind that I have encountered. I have benefited from reading it and wish that I had access to it earlier in my career. This would be useful addition to every medical school bookstore and library. It could be used as a text in courses on research design and process

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck:

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be positive all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people. For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up. Manson makes the argument, backed by both academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited - "not everybody can be extraordinary; there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault". Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek. There are only so many things we can give a f*ck about, so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

Observations on the Double Agen

It’s essentially a how-to guide for turning agents into double agents. As in, spotting the personality types common among double agents, controlling double agents, “Running the Operation: Do’s and Dont’s” (an actual subheading from the article), turning double agents into triple agents (or realizing they were tripled all along), etc. As the author describes it, he is providing “guideposts for the dim, replicate half-world where counterintelligence raises deception to the second and third powers.” A bit of a mind-melter.

What is Ghuluw?

With the advent of social media the doors of information, perception, interpretation and analysis of religious text has become a common practice of the public. Where such issues were restricted to academic curriculum only, they are now discussed by everyone. Religion is discussed and argued by anyone who has access to social media and inventory of opinions, irrespective of his or her interest or aptitude in understanding the religion. The definite outcome of such religious discussions is deep ideological divisions among the believers, creating an impression that there are different sub-sects among the Shiites themselves.

The end of america

I wrote this book because I could no longer ignore the echoes between events in the past and forces at work today. When I discussed these issues informally with a good friend who is the daughter of Holocaust survivors—and who teaches students about the American system of government as a kind of personal response to what happened to her family—she insisted that I present this argument. I also wrote it as I did because, in the midst of my research, I went to Christopher Le and Jennifer Gandin's wedding. Jennifer is one of our graduates—a gifted young writer who is the daughter of a Texas minister. Her American heartland roots reach back generations. Chris—the "young patriot" of the subtitle—is a born activist, a natural grassroots leader and teacher. He helps run the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and is active on a range of issues. They are characteristic of the kinds of the idealistic young people—idealistic Americans—who need to lead our nation out of this crisis. I attended Chris and Jennifer's wedding on a warm day in early autumn. It was a scene of perfect Americana: the best of this nation's freedom, bounty, and shelter. The celebration took place on a green slope along the Hudson River Valley. Jennifer's family decorated the ceremony and reception sites in billowing white chiffon; Chris's mother and his female relatives cooked for days to create wonderful Vietnamese dishes. Jennifer appeared for the vows themselves, glowing, in a white ao dai, the traditional Vietnamese wedding gown, then changed for the dancing—appearing equally radiant—into a purple American ball gown. There were children playing, trees soughing in the wind, the sun dappling the scene; there were toasts and gifts, a great DJ, and bad jokes. Friends of different races and backgrounds were dancing and chatting, and sharing in the affection we all had for the young couple. It was a scene of everything this country should be. I was there having emerged from my reading and could not ignore the terrible storm clouds gathering in the nation at large, and I felt that the young couple needed one more gift: the tools to fully realize and defend their freedom; the means to be sure that their own children would be born in liberty. This was not an academic thought. Chris's mother, Le Mai, who welcomed the guests with wit and style, is a heroine. She fled Vietnam as a young woman, a refugee—a "boat person"—with her less-than-two-months-old Vu (Chris's birth name) in her arms. She knew she had to risk her own life and her child's life for the chance to live in freedom. With our own until-recent surfeit of liberty, we scarcely understand the preciousness of liberty as she does. But we have to reach this kind of understanding quickly, in order to contend with the crisis we face and to act with the urgency the time requires.
