Amma's Daughters

As a precocious young girl, Surekha knew very little about the details of her mother Amma’s unusual past and that of Babu, her mysterious and sometimes absent father. The tense, uncertain family life created by her parents’ distant and fractious marriage and their separate ambitions informs her every action and emotion. Then one evening, in a moment of uncharacteristic transparency and vulnerability, Amma tells Surekha and her older sister Didi of the family tragedy that changed the course of her life. Finally, the daughters begin to understand the source of their mother’s deep commitment to the Indian nationalist movement and her seemingly unending willingness to sacrifice in the name of that pursuit. In this re-memory based on the published and unpublished work of Amma and Surekha, Meenal Shrivastava, Surekha’s daughter, uncovers the history of the female foot soldiers of Gandhi’s national movement in the early twentieth century. As Meenal weaves these written accounts together with archival research and family history, she gives voice and honour to the hundreds of thousands of largely forgotten or unacknowledged women who, threatened with imprisonment for treason and sedition, relentlessly and selflessly gave toward the revolution.

Journey Across Three Worlds: Science-Fiction Stories

One more collection of Soviet SF stories now lies in your hands. Seven stories by ten authors. Like ten people talking around one table. Collections of stories by different writers always resemble round-table conferences. All the more so is this true of science fiction, as a genre that bubbles with polemic zest. Indeed, I would compare this more to a students' debating society in some smoke-filled room, in whose blue haze the flushed faces and flashing eyes can barely be distinguished. Here, one declaims with inspired ardour, another grins wryly, as he intersperses some snide remark, a third thumps the table, his voice hoarse with passion. Students, indeed, most young folk, for that matter, adore to talk of love and learning, of life and its meaning, of virtuous and wicked ways, of the problems that face man today and tomorrow, and of how all this is expressed by writer and artist. Science fiction, in effect, does the same, with, perhaps, as is only natural, a somewhat greater emphasis on the problems of tomorrow and of how best to convey their substance. Soviet SF lies well within the mainstream of Soviet writing, generally, and is as diverse in theme and imagery. In the fifty odd years of its existence, its course has been a chequered one, veering with all the turns in the tide of Soviet history, particularly during the times of the First Five -Year Plan and World War Two, but more so, when Sputnik shot up to furrow the unexplored outer fields of space, and the now famous dispute between poet and physicist began. Some twenty seven years ago, Boris Slutsky, a rather well-known Soviet poet - who is no writer of SF, mind you! - produced the following quatrain, which is often quoted in this country: It is the poet versus physicist; One is out, the other in, today. Perhaps a general law is this, And no accidental step astray? Soviet science fiction also has its physicists and its poets. The physicists believe in the omnipotence of the exact sciences, in mathematics and the machine. They claim that every single problem can be pinned down to the drawing board and can be solved in laboratory retorts, that everything can be done by computer and robot. The poets are sceptical. Not for them are the formulas of the physicists, but rather the feelings and promptings of the heart. True enough, the machine can make life easier; but, they say, it can also become an onerous, oppressive burden. This book, as you will have probably noticed, is entitled Journey Across Three Worlds. It is called thus after the novelet presented herein by the Abramovs, father and son. No generational animosity here, as you see! Quite the contrary. One is Seventy odd years old, the other only thirty, one is a professional writer, with numerous novels, stories and essays to his credit, the other is an engineer of the breed inspired by Sputnik, and for whom all of Soviet SF that came before serves as but the launching pad for blasting off into the incredible unknown. And, indeed, everything that comes from under their pen - pens? - is steeped in the latest and most unbelievable of hypotheses, in the wildest of fantasies and conjectures. This time it is parallel worlds, but elsewhere it may be extragalactic visitors, invested with an aura of unfathomable power, or the duplication not just of things and inanimate objects, but also of people, whole cities, countries, an even whole epochs, what is sometimes known as the split-image theme.

To Seek Out New Worlds: Exploring Links between Science Fiction and World Politics

This volume explores the science fiction/world politics intertext. Through detailed analyses of such texts as Blade Runner, Stalker, Star Trek, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the chapters in this volume examine the complex and sometimes contradictory relations between world politics, both as discipline and as practice, and discourses of science fiction. Offering a novel combination of popular culture analysis with major theoretical and empirical issues concerning world politics, To Seek Out New Worlds provides insights into the discursive constitution of both science fiction and world politics while highlighting the occasional challenges that the science fiction/world politics intertext launches at our common sense.

Bhagvad Gita:Treatise of Self-help

he Bhagvad Gita, popularly known as Gita, with its twin tracks of spiritual ethos and philosophical outlook, helps man commute to the destination of human excellence on the broad gauge of life. The unsurpassed art of living that the Gita expostulates, paves the way for the 'liberation of man' and that's what makes the Gita, which probably is around for over two millennia now, the treatise of self-help. Nonetheless, all along, its spiritual track has come to acquire primacy what with its protagonists being the religiously inclined men and women for most part. Even Mahatma Gandhi, the most famous and ardent advocate of Gita of our times, was eloquent about the spiritual solace that it afforded him. Needless to say, the innumerable commentaries on the Gita that appear in print or get voiced in discourses invariably come from people with religio-spiritual orientation.

PhD Musings 2

Here's another collection of my forum postings. Again I cover a lot of area, all of which relates in some way to doing a PhD. I hope that you find the book interesting and that some of the ideas expressed herein are useful to you. The subtitle of this book - "More postings of a serving PhD student" - came about partly as a description of the contents, that is, they are more postings from various web forums. Also it satisfies my delight in words that have multiple meanings. 'Serving' has three relevant meanings here. Firstly, 'serving' refers to doing ones time and duty in an important position such as that of a diplomat or in the armed services. It can also refer, of course, to 'doing time' in prison. I feel that, in one or other of these senses (take your pick), I am 'serving' my time as a PhD student. Secondly, it can refer to delivering something to a person, such as a meal. I see this book as 'serving' up some interesting bits to you, the reader. I am 'serving' the postings up to you for your delectation.

The Loch Ness Monster on the Web

Whether or not it actually exists, The Loch Ness Monster is certainly alive and well on the Internet. This book, by no means includes all the websites that refer to The Loch Ness Monster that you might find. For one thing, there are too many of them. For another, they, like much else on the Internet, are constantly changing. Always, new sites are appearing and old ones disappearing into the lost lands of cyberspace. As information and ideas change the websites are changed to reflect what the owner considers to be the most up-to-date information which supports his/her view. Rarely do they add information which might count against their point-of-view. Just like the rest of the Internet, really. In presenting the sites in this book I have not argued one way nor the other, neither for nor against the existence of Nessie. This book is not a presentation of my opinion, nor the arguments for or against her existence. It is just a source book from which you might start if you wish to know more about Nessie. It's up to you to make up your own mind. Although, of course, I do have my own opinion on the beastie's existence, I have tried not to let that colour my choice of sites. My choice was largely random although I have tried to treat the 'for' and 'against' sites fairly equally. Hopefully, I have chosen enough variation from the 'pros' and the 'cons' to show you some representative sites from what is available.

Concise Edition: How To Earn Bitcoins Fast Without Investment And Make Money

In this e-book, Concise Edition: How to Earn Bitcoins Fast without Investment and Make Money , I will show you the best way to make big money without any investment. This method pays about $ 1 per ad click. (You can click 1 ad once every 30 seconds). Of course clicking one button for the whole day is a very tedious task, so I wrote a simple script that automatically clicks on this ad every 30 seconds. If you leave your PC and the script running, you can get around 0.04 BTC overnight! This is really crazy. 0.04 BTC = RM 1,500.00. At first, I was sceptical about this method, but decided to leave my computer for a few hours, with great results. In this e-book, it is very direct; I will focus entirely on the right steps, and prevent readers from wasting their time. Not everyone has the time to read diligently.

Algorithm

This text, extensively class-tested over a decade at UC Berkeley and UC San Diego, explains the fundamentals of algorithms in a story line that makes the material enjoyable and easy to digest. Emphasis is placed on understanding the crisp mathematical idea behind each algorithm, in a manner that is intuitive and rigorous without being unduly formal. Features include: The use of boxes to strengthen the narrative: pieces that provide historical context, descriptions of how the algorithms are used in practice, and excursions for the mathematically sophisticated. Carefully chosen advanced topics that can be skipped in a standard one-semester course, but can be covered in an advanced algorithms course or in a more leisurely two-semester sequence. An accessible treatment of linear programming introduces students to one of the greatest achievements in algorithms. An optional chapter on the quantum algorithm for factoring provides a unique peephole into this exciting topic. In addition to the text, DasGupta also offers a Solutions Manual, which is available on the Online Learning Center. " Algorithms is an outstanding undergraduate text, equally informed by the historical roots and contemporary applications of its subject. Like a captivating novel, it is a joy to read." Introduction to parallel computing: [a practical guide with examples in C]

In the last few years, courses on parallel computation have been developed and offered in many institutions in the UK, Europe and US as a recognition of the growing significance of this topic in mathematics and computer science. There is a clear need for texts that meet the needs of students and lecturers and this book, based on the author's lecture at ETH Zurich is an ideal practical student guide to scientific computing on parallel computers working up from a hardware instruction level, to shared memory machines and finally to distributed memory machines. Aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students in applied mathematics, computer science and engineering, subjects covered include linear algebra, fast Fourier transform, and Monte-Carlo simulations, including examples in C and in some cases Fortran. This book is also ideal for practitioners and programmers.

Runes and Roman Letters in Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts

This book presents the first comprehensive study of Anglo-Saxon manuscript texts containing runic letters. To date there has been no comprehensive study of these works in a single volume, although the need for such an examination has long been recognized. This is in spite of a growing academic interest in the 'mise-en-page' of early medieval manuscripts. The texts discussed in this study include Old English riddles and elegies, the Cynewulfian poems, charms, 'Solomon and Saturn I', and the Old English 'Rune Poem'. The focus of the discussion is on the literary analysis of these texts in their palaeographic and runological contexts. Anglo-Saxon authors and scribes did not, of course, operate within a vacuum, and so these primary texts are considered alongside relevant epigraphic inscriptions, physical objects, and historical documents. Victoria Symons argues that all of these runic works are in various ways thematically focused on acts of writing, visual communication, and the nature of the written word. The conclusion that emerges over the course of the book is that, when encountered in the context of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, runic letters consistently represent the written word in a way that Roman letters do not.

The Hidden Meaning of Truth and Untruth

A lot of people struggle to understand what the truth is, what is right and what is wrong. There is perpetual dilemma to distinguish between right and wrong. According to Dada Bhagwan, the Gnani Purush (the enlightened one), in the worldly life there are three types of truth. One - absolute truth (self) second - relative truth and third - untruth. In this book, Dadashri has discussed the meaning of absolute and relative truth. Absolute truth 'I' can never be destroyed, it is eternal. It belongs to the soul (atma). The realization that you are pure soul (shuddha-atma) is eternal, and ultimate truth. Relative truth is what is determined by the people at large. The relative truth may vary from person to person. The relative truth may help us in our development in the relative world, but for real development absolute truth is necessary. The book presents Pujya Dadashri’s spiritual discourses on absolute and relative truth and the nature of truth.

Things to Remember: Reflections on Our True Identity

Through the ages, there have always been those who, when they looked at another, understood they were looking at themselves. Seers and mystics of all religious traditions have seen through the veil of form and recognised the essential oneness of all things. But what would be the implications if we held an awareness of the Divine in everyone all of the time? What if we tried genuinely to live this belief day by day, minute by minute, in the encounters we have with our family, with our friends, at work, and in society at large? This book is an invitation and a challenge to explore these questions. It draws on the author's own experiences as a Quaker and as a student of A Course in Miracles.

Why_Agree_Why_Move_Unifying_Agreement.pdf

One of the great mysteries of human language is the existence of movement operations. Why does movement occur? At every stage in the development of generative grammar, an attempt has been made to answer this question. It would not be an overstatement to say that the answer at any given point characterizes in an essential way the general nature of the theory at that particular point. In other words, every step in the evolution of generative grammar has been, in no small measure, an attempt to construct an answer to this question that is better than the one before. In Government-Binding Theory (GB), movement operations—in fact, all operations—are entirely optional, so Moveacan move anything anywhere, anytime. Independent universal principles such as the Empty Category Principle and Subjacency extract from this overgenerated set of strings the subset that constitutes the grammatical strings of a particular language. In this way, the independent principles not only allow the theory to reach descriptive adequacy—in the ideal, of course—they also allow it to reach explanatory adequacy in that they ‘‘give a general theory of linguistic structure of which each [grammar of a particular language] is an exemplification’’ (Chomsky 1955/1975:77).
